14 Signs That Indicate You are in a Healthy Relationship

More often we get that incertitude about whether we are making the right choice regarding our relationships or not. Certain questions like, “Is he/she the one for me?” “Are we taking this relationship to the next level?” “Am I doing the right thing by being with this person?” often pop up. These questions perhaps come from a place of doubt, or based off of experience, or you just want to be sure of what you are doing. These are all relatable.

Well, wouldn’t you want a grasp as to whether you are in a healthy relationship or not? I bet you do!

Healthy relationships are interdependent, there is a reliance on each other for mutual love and support. It is often characterized by shared responsibility, fairness, trust, mutual respect and understanding.

Check out these signs that indicate you are in a healthy relationship;

Open Communication

There is usually open communication in a healthy relationship. You are not scared of expressing your feelings, explaining situations and sharing experiences with your partner, because they are always willing to listen. There should be frequent communication in a relationship.

Honesty

When you are honest about your feelings, thoughts, experiences, and your partner does not bash you when you do, then that is a pointer that your relationship is healthy. You should feel comfortable talking about anything with your partner, and vice versa. If you don’t, then it may just be a time for re-evaluation.

Respect Boundaries

It is important to respect each other’s set boundaries. Don’t be too pushy! Trust that your partner knows what he/she is doing. There are times your partner needs sometime apart, you should be able to respect that, and give him/her the needed personal space.

Mutual Trust

A healthy relationship is often depicted by mutual trust. You should be able to trust each other; in doing so, your actions and inactions should be trust-worthy, you should be open with your partner, and when they share experiences with you, make them feel you are a safe haven they can always run to.

Individuality

The fact that you are in a relationship does not mean you should lose yourself in the process. In fact, a healthy relationship is one that allows you to be who you are- with a better version. So, it is important you embrace your individuality. You should have your own identity and be confident about yourself.

Help Each Other Achieve Set Goals

You know you are in a healthy relationship when you have a partner who supports you in achieving your goals, who pushes you to be a better version of yourself, who cheers you on and encourages you to never give up.

You are in a healthy relationship if you and your partner spend ample time together, also when you enjoy each other’s company.

Understand Each Other’s Love language

When you know and understand each other’s love language, it is an indication that you are in a healthy relationship. It could be words of affirmation, spending quality time together, physical touch, acts of service, receiving gifts, admiration and so much more. So, it is crucial to study your partner to know their love language, and “speak” to them in that language.

Resolve Quarrels and Issues Amicably

Squabbles and frictions are bound to exist in relationships, however, both party should be able to resolve them amicably. Agree to disagree, and disagree to agree. A relationship characterized by maturity where partners are able to resolve issues amongst themselves is a healthy relationship.

Intimacy

Intimacy is a feeling of being close, emotionally connected and supported. Healthy relationships have intimacy. You should be able to share your deepest thoughts, feelings and emotions with your partner.

Team work

Where there is team work and team spirit, know that you are in a healthy relationship. You and your partner should be able to work together, agree on issues, in order to build the relationship and achieve goals.

Compromise

There is compromise in a healthy relationship. You and your partner should be able to reach a compromise on certain issues. It’s not always you let your will prevail, get to hear from your partner, what he/she feels about an issue, and work together to bring solutions. Also, be more understanding and have the belief that for the relationship to work, you have to play your part, and do it well.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is crucial. There are times your partner will offend you, you should be able to forgive. However, it is important not to take your partner for granted, nor constantly hurt them just because you know he/she is always willing to forgive. You won’t hurt your partner if you truly love them.

Joviality

When you have a jovial, loving partner, then it is a sign that you are in a healthy relationship. Your partner should be able to put in one or two jokes in-between conversations, or take them when they are cracked by you. Partners in healthy relationships also go on play-dates as a way of bonding more.

You and your partner do not necessarily have to possess all of these qualities, however, these are strong indicators that you are in a healthy relationship.
