How Authoritarian Parenting could affect your child I

Parenting, as discussed earlier, can often be tricky and it is important to try to strike a balance between being too strict or too lenient as both extremes could have negative impacts on the overall development of children.

Authoritarian Parenting and its Characteristics

Authoritarian parenting is characterized by high expectations from parents and and low responsiveness. It focuses on obedience, discipline and control, and provides little nurturance to the child. This style is also called autocratic parenting. It is one of the three parenting styles originally propounded by developmental psychologist Diana Baumrind in the 1960s. The other two styles are authoritative and permissive.

Authoritarian parents focus on control and demand obedience at all times. They often offer no explanation for their demands or rules and expect to be obeyed without questions. Some of the characteristics are:

  1. Authoritarian parents have strict rules which they expect their children to follow at all times without offering any explanations or entertaining questions.
  2. They use punitive punishments such as spanking and abusing the child when their children fail to follow rules.
  3. They do not offer choices to children.
  4. They have very low tolerance for indiscipline and misbehavior.
  5. They also often shame their children for mistakes.
  6. Authoritarian parents have little or no trust in their children.
  7. They are emotionally and physically distant.

Some negative effects Of Authoritarian Parenting On Children are:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Poor social skills
  • Inability to make decisions on their own
  • Lack of personal creativity
  • Inability to cope with or accept failure
  • Hostility
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Insecurity
  • Hostility
